Currently, Tom McCartney is responsible for leading and the development of Avnet's business in Japan, Avnet's newest and fourth independent international region. The operations there were acquired in July 2005 when Avnet closed on the purchase of global electronics distributor Memec. Mr. McCartney was also charged with leading the global integration of Memec, the largest acquisition in Avnet's history. Since then he has continued to build Avnet's electronic components business in Japan, including the first ever (by a non-Japanese company) acquisition of a Japanese distributor, Nippon Denso. This acquisition added many new supplier partners to the line card and added multiple new customers, significantly improved the infrastructure and contributed to building a strong local leadership team. Avnet Japan is now represented with over 200 full-time people and several hundred million dollars in revenue, and growing. In addition to Japan, Mr. McCartney also has the dual responsibility of leading strategy and global business development for interconnect, passive and electromechanical products, which, as of Avnet's fiscal year ending 2009, represented roughly $1.5 billion in sales. He reports to Harley Feldberg, president of Avnet Electronics Marketing

In 2004, Mr. McCartney, with more than two decades of experience in the electronic components distribution industry, took on the global role of senior vice president, Business Development, IP&E (interconnect, passive and electromechanical components), Worldwide at Avnet Electronics Marketing. From December 2001 to July 2004, he served as president of Americas-based Avnet IP&E, a division of Avnet Electronics Marketing, Americas, and the largest IP&E distributor in the world, with revenues approaching $1 billion. From 1999 to 2001, Mr. McCartney served as senior vice president of Avnet Americas IP&E Product Business Group, responsible for all the materials, pricing, supplier relations and marketing for that business. He was named an Avnet Inc. corporate officer in January 2004.

He began his career in distribution with Powell Electronics in 1982, and joined Time Electronics in 1984, where he spent the next 14 years and advanced his career in sales, branch management, regional management and as an area sales director. When Time Electronics merged with Hamilton/Avnet to form Avnet's Electronics Marketing Group, Mr. McCartney was promoted to senior vice president of its IP&E Product Business Group. While in this position he successfully led several key Avnet acquisition integrations and was instrumental in the creation of the Avnet IP&E product division.

Tom has served as a board member of NEDA (National Electronics Distribution Association) and of EDS (Electronic Distribution Show Corporation) and also has participated in the development and facilitation of Avnet's Global Executive Gold Training program.
