Tom McCartney is responsible for developing and leading Avnet's business in Japan, Avnet's newest and fourth independent international region. The operations there were acquired in July 2005 when Avnet closed on the purchase of global electronics distributor Memec. Mr. McCartney was also charged with leading the global integration of Memec. Since then he has continued to build Avnet's electronic components business in Japan, both organically and through the first-ever acquisition by a non-Japanese company, of the privately held Japanese distributor, Nippon Denso in 2009. In the summer of 2010, the acquisition of the first-ever publically traded distributor in Japan by a non-Japanese company, Unidux, Inc., was successfully concluded. These acquisitions added significant new revenue to Avnet EM Japan, new supplier partners to the line card and new customers. Mr. McCartney assumed the responsibility as the president of Avnet EM Holdings (Japan) Godo Kaisha, the new parent company in Japan for Avnet Electronics Marketing.

In addition to Japan, Mr. McCartney has the responsibility of leading strategy and global business development for interconnect, passive and electromechanical (IP&E) products. He reports to Harley Feldberg, president of Avnet Electronics Marketing, Global.

In 2004, Mr. McCartney, with more than two decades of experience in the electronic components distribution industry, took on the global role of senior vice president, Business Development, IP&E Worldwide at Avnet Electronics Marketing. From December 2001 to July 2004, he served as president of Americas-based Avnet IP&E, a division of Avnet Electronics Marketing, Americas, and the largest IP&E distributor in the world. From 1999 to 2001, Mr. McCartney served as senior vice president of Avnet Electronics Marketing, Americas, IP&E Product Business Group, responsible for all the materials, pricing, supplier relations and marketing for that business. He was named an Avnet, Inc. corporate officer in January 2004.

He began his career in distribution with Powell Electronics in 1982, and joined Time Electronics in 1984, where he spent the next 14 years and advanced his career in sales, branch management, regional management and as an area sales director. When Time Electronics merged with Hamilton/Avnet to form Avnet's Electronics Marketing Group, Mr. McCartney was promoted to senior vice president of its IP&E Product Business Group. While in this position he successfully led several key Avnet acquisition integrations and was instrumental in the creation of the Avnet IP&E product division.

Mr. McCartney has served as a board member of NEDA (National Electronics Distribution Association) and of EDS (Electronic Distribution Show Corporation) and also has participated in the development and facilitation of Avnet's Global Executive Gold Training program.
