PHOENIX -- Avnet, Inc. (NYSE:AVT), a global technology marketing, distribution and services company, was ranked #184 on Newsweek's inaugural Green Rankings of the 500 largest U.S. companies. Companies were ranked based on their actual environmental performance, policies, and reputation as measured by leading environmental researchers KLD Research & Analytics, Trucost, and CorporateRegister.com.
According to Newsweek, the "goal was to assess each company's actual resource use and emissions and its policies and strategies, along with its reputation among its peers. The 500 companies included in the ranking are the largest U.S. companies as measured by revenue, market capitalization and number of employees. The companies are broken out into 15 sectors, based on the FTSE/Dow Jones Industry Classification Benchmark (ICB)." Avnet ranked 18 out of 47 in the "Industrial Goods" sector and was the highest ranking technology distributor.
"For years we have been proactive in supporting environmental programs primarily due to regulations and trading partner business requirements. More recently, we recognized that developing a green approach to managing our business was not only socially responsible, but also good business in helping us become more efficient in our use of natural resources," said Avnet CEO and Chairman Roy Vallee. "We created a global council to develop a corporate policy and drive strategies that would move us toward more sustainable business practices. While there is still much to be done, our efforts are already paying off in reduced energy consumption, corporate recycling programs and heightened involvement of individual employees."
